The goal of the Special Services Department is focused on individual student needs, varied placements, intervention/remediation, multiple accommodations, learning styles, collaboration/coordination of community agencies, and community oriented experiences.

The Moss Point School District Special Services Department is responsible for all student educational needs relating to the areas of:

  • Special Education (Tier 4),

  • Section 504,

  • Gifted Education, and

  • Social/Emotional Learning (BE-Well).

Special Education- The Moss Point School District Special Services Department participates with the Mississippi Department of Education to identify, locate, and evaluate children through ages 21 who have health impairments or physical, mental, communicative, and/or emotional disabilities.  The Special Services Department serves children ages 3-21 with identified disabilities through a continuum of services at each grade level and school. Services include inclusion, resource, self contained/community-based programs, positive behavior supports, related services, preschool supports (Part C), multi-disabled classes, and homebound services. Meeting individual student needs is the goal for the Special Services Department.

Section 504- Students with qualifying diagnoses may be eligible for 504 plans. Please contact the Special Services Department for questions regarding Section 504.

Gifted Education- The LIFT (Gifted Education) programs are offered for grades 2-6 for eligible students. Moss Point has three gifted teachers who serve about 100 students. All first graders are screened for gifted eligibility and referrals can be made by teachers, parents, or students.

Social-Emotional Learning BE-Well Initiative-  A program developed to help students of all ages to better comprehend their emotions, to feel those emotions fully, and demonstrate empathy for others. There are 5 Social Emotional Learning competencies that are vital to the teaching and understanding of social and emotional learning at school (self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision making, social awareness, and relationship skills).
